Can produce parts of almost any shape;

Cost-effective for prototyping and short runs;

High dimensional tolerances are possible;

Smooth finishes can be achieved;

Design Considerations

Use shapes that will hold well during machining, like straight edges;

Milling creates a visible cut pattern on the surface of the material;

Avoid deep pockets and ensure corners are rounded

Avoid flimsy shapes;

What is CNC Milling?

CNC Milling is an automated process used to manufacture 2D and 3D parts by removing material from raw stock.

To make a CNC milled part, a block or sheet is placed on a table below a spindle which holds a cutting tool. A computer controls the tool used, the rotation speed and the vertical motion of the spindle, and the horizontal motion of the table. This allows loaded cutters such as drills, taps and end mills to remove portions of the material to create shapes.

Economical for both short and long runs;

High dimensional tolerances are possible;

Smooth finishes can be achieved;

Design Considerations

Avoid designing long, thin structures;

Consider specifying a desired surface roughness;

Bored holes become difficult when the ratio between depth and diameter is high;

What is CNC Turning?

Turning is a process by which material is cut to create round shapes, typically using a CNC Lathe. The workpiece is placed inside the lathe and rotates while a cutter removes material until only the desired shape remains.

Turning is ideal for cylindrical parts and is primarily done using round rod material, but square and hexagonal bar stock can also be used.

Types of Stainless Steel

Austenitic: Non-magnetic, highly formable and can be cold worked, but not heat treated. Austenitic stainless steel is corrosion resistant but prone to stress corrosion cracking. Often used to make shafts, valves, bolts, bushings, nuts, aircraft fittings, brewing equipment, and cryogenic vessels. Austenitic stainless steels are either 200 or 300 series with common grades including 201, 202, 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 308, 309, 310, 314, 316, 317, 321, 347, 348, and 384.

Precipitation Hardening Grade: These grades are heat treatable, typically have much higher strength than austenitic stainless steels and retain much of their strength in high temperatures. Often referred to as PH Type stainless steel, and used to make military equipment and aircraft structural components. Common grades include 17-7 PH, PH 15-7 Mo, 17-4 PH, and 15-5 PH.

Ferritic: Magnetic with lower ductility and corrosion resistance than austenitic grades. Ferritic stainless steel grades have a high resistance to stress corrosion cracking and can be cold worked, but are not heat treated. Often used to make heat exchangers, automotive fasteners, and furnace components. Ferritic stainless steels are 400 series with common grades including 405, 409, 430, 434, 436, 442, and 446.

Duplex: A hybrid of austenitic and ferritic steels, duplex stainless steels are known for exceptionally high strength and stress corrosion cracking resistance. Duplex stainless steels are easily heat treated but difficult to cold form. Often used to make chemical processing equipment, pressure vessels, and heat exchanger components. Common UNS grades include S32101, S32304, S32003, S31803, S32205, S32760, S32750, S32550, S32707, and S33207.

Martensitic: Magnetic and heat treatable with higher strength but lower corrosion resistance than ferritic grades. Often used to make pump shafts, bolts and screws, valves, bushings, rivets, coal chutes, cutlery, jet engine parts, aircraft fittings, mining machinery, rifle barrels, and fire extinguisher inserts. Martensitic stainless steels are 400 and 500 series with common grades including 410, 414, 416, 420, 431, and 440.

Surface Finishing Plating

What is Plating?

Plating is a process where a conductive surface is covered with a thin layer of metal. Due to how thin it is, plating does not substantially hide or smooth surface imperfections. Plating is commonly used to prevent corrosion, increase durability, alter surface friction, and improve appearance.

eMachineShop utilizes electroplating and electroless plating. The main difference between the two is that electroless plating does not require an external power source because it produces a negative charge on the surface of a part through a chemical reaction. Many metals can be used for plating, including copper, nickel, zinc, silver, and gold

Injection molding produces parts by forcing molten material into a mold where it cools and hardens to the mold’s shape.

Hengtong Precision offers cost-effective injection molding solutions whether you need a hundred pieces or a large production order.

What is Plastic Injection Molding?

Plastic injection molding is a process by which granular plastic is fed from a hopper into a heated chamber where it melts and hardens to create parts.

The granules are fed into the heating chamber by a screw-type plunger where they melt. As the plunger advances, the melted plastic is forced through a nozzle into the mold cavity.

Since the mold remains relatively cold, the plastic solidifies almost immediately after the cavity is filled. After the plastic is injected, it must cool before the final part can be ejected from the mold.
